The Truth about Sarah Jiu
by: Keleila Handelman – Kerman
One cold autumn night a girl named Sarah Jiu was born.
The day before her 15th birthday her best friend Maclean Bally gave her a “Best Friend necklace” they were designed as boom-boxes. “Thanks SOOO much for the awesome necklace. Are you sure you can’t come to my party, you’re my best friend?” “Yeah, my dad said I had to be home for his big party. I want to come, I’m, just not allowed.” As they were talking the bell rang. “Off to class everyone!” the broadcast was from their principal, Mr. Matusie.
As Sarah and Maclean headed down the hall Sarah’s cell-phone fell into the trash. “Um. Your cell-phone fell into the garbage!” “Not more bad luck!” Sadly, Sarah had lots more bad luck coming. She tried to pick it out of the trash and accidently fell in. “HELP MMMMEEEE!!!!!” Sarah screamed. Maclean ran to get Mr. Matusie before he entered his meeting. “Sarah, is, in, the,” “Hurry up Maclean!” Mr. Matusie said. “TRASH!!” “What!?” screamed Mr. Matusie. They ran to get Sarah out of the trash.
After lunch Sarah still had a little garbage in her hair. As they walked she pulled it out. “Sarah, are you alright?” asked Zara, a girl from homeroom. “Yeah, I’m alright, I guess.” Sarah replied sounding bored. A few seconds after Zara left the PDA sounded. Then came a HORRIBLE sound. “A-hem, students and teachers may I please have your attention!” It was the secretary, Mrs. Usta. She had a VERY unpleasant sound for a voice. “May I please have your attention.” She repeated a second time. “We will be getting a new alarm system later today, around 3:45. There will be several alarms sounding off. Please disregard any loud or disturbing noises. Please proceed to ‘the Fire Program’ or ‘Lock Down Mode’ if told to by me or Mr. Matusie! Thanks for your time!”
Later in French the alarm sounded off. “Students remain calm.” said their French teacher: Mme Rosetto. Then came a noise from the PDA. “Students please proceed to ‘Lock Down Mode.’ As this is a real drill.” Everyone ran to the corner of the room. Sarah was in the hall and scared to death! She ran from room to room and nobody let her in. Then she ran to the office and those doors were locked and sealed as well. Sarah ran to the washroom, that door had been locked also. The only place she could go was into the “Boys” washroom. Sarah freaked out. She didn’t want to hide in the “Boys” washroom. And maybe if she went in she would get in trouble! But, what to do?
She ran to the front door and saw it wasn’t locked yet. She pushed open the doors and another alarm set off. She ran outside ignoring the alarm. She ran to the closest safe area which was a “Mac’s Milk” down the street. When the alarm set off everyone assumed that the drill was over. When everyone started back to class the PDA sounded again. “Please go back to ‘Lock Down Mode.’ This is not a drill. The alarm was set off by someone opening the door. We have an intruder.”
Everyone FREAKED OUT, screaming and yelling so loudly that the neighbors were worried and called 911. The police arrived a few moments later, and without a sound they entered and unlocked the office door. Mr. Matusie came out of his office and said “What’s going on here?” “We got a call saying that there’s been lots of screaming and yelling!” Replied the police officer. “We’re here to help. By the way my name is Officer Peter! “First of all we must, um, uh. Let me think!” said Mr. Matusie.
Stay tuned for the next part of the book!
